What metals are inside a smartphone?
A modern smartphone is essentially a tiny treasure chest. The average device contains more than 30 different elements, but a handful carry most of the recycling value:
- Copper — in wiring, the antenna and internal connectors.
- Gold — in circuit board contacts and connector pins, chosen for its conductivity and resistance to corrosion.
- Silver — in solder joints and switches.
- Palladium — in multilayer ceramic capacitors.
- Platinum — trace amounts in sensors.
- Aluminum — in the casing, frame and shielding.
- Rare earth elements — neodymium and dysprosium in the speakers and vibration motor; europium and yttrium in the display.
- Lithium and cobalt — in the battery.
The proportions per device are tiny, but they’re unusually concentrated compared to natural sources. By industry estimates, a metric ton of discarded cell phones contains many times more gold than a metric ton of typical gold ore — which is why electronics recyclers refer to phones, laptops and circuit boards as the “urban mine”.

The honest answer: not enough to retire on, but enough to matter at scale. A single average smartphone contains approximately 0.034 grams of gold — worth only a few dollars at market prices. Add the silver, palladium and copper, and the total recoverable metal value typically lands between one and five dollars per device, depending on the model and prevailing metal prices.

Why you should not try to extract metals at home
Search “how to extract gold from cell phones” and you’ll find plenty of videos showing nitric acid baths, mercury amalgamation and aqua regia. Skip them. The chemicals required to leach gold and palladium from circuit boards are among the most dangerous substances a home experimenter can handle:
- Aqua regia (a mix of nitric and hydrochloric acid) releases toxic nitrogen oxides and chlorine gas during the reaction.
- Mercury, used in older amalgamation methods, is neurotoxic and bioaccumulative — once it’s in your body, it stays.
- Cyanide-based industrial processes require permitted facilities and engineering controls that don’t exist in a garage.
- The leftover sludge contains lead, cadmium, arsenic and other heavy metals classified as hazardous waste under federal law.
Beyond the personal risk, pouring the residue down a drain is a federal environmental violation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) (EPA). Industrial recyclers process this material in closed-loop systems with scrubbers, ventilation and waste capture. The right way to capture the value is to send the phones to facilities where the recovery infrastructure already exists.

The right way to recycle an old cell phone
Before you hand a phone to anyone, do three things:
- Wipe your data. Run a factory reset (Android: Settings → System → Reset → Erase all data; iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings). Sign out of iCloud, Google and any banking apps first.
- Remove the SIM and microSD card. Both can carry personal data and neither adds scrap value.
- Check the battery. If the phone is swollen or the battery is bulging, flag it at drop-off. Damaged lithium-ion cells need to be separated to prevent fires further down the recycling line.
Once those steps are done, the phone is ready for any of these paths:

- Sorting and triage. Working or refurbishable phones are pulled aside.
- Battery removal. Lithium-ion batteries are taken out and routed to specialized battery recyclers — the step that prevents fires in the rest of the process.
- Mechanical shredding. The remaining hardware is shredded into a coarse mixed stream.
- Magnetic and eddy-current separation. Steel comes out with magnets; aluminum and copper are separated by induced currents.
- Smelting and refining. The mixed metal stream goes to a smelter where high temperatures and chemical processing recover gold, silver, palladium and copper.
- Final material recovery. Plastics and glass are processed separately, and the recovered metals re-enter the manufacturing supply chain — often inside new electronics within a few months.
