The difference comes down to one thing: iron. Ferrous metals contain iron, so they’re magnetic and prone to rust — think steel and cast iron. Non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminum, brass, lead, zinc) contain little or no iron, so they aren’t magnetic, resist rust, and are usually worth more per pound. The fastest way to tell them apart is a magnet: if it sticks firmly, the metal is ferrous.

Walk into any scrap yard and the very first thing that happens to your load is a split into two buckets: ferrous and non-ferrous. It’s the most important distinction in the whole business, it decides how your metal is priced, and you can learn to do it yourself in about ten seconds with a magnet. Here’s what the terms mean, how to test for them, the one big exception to watch out for, and why it matters for your payout.

The whole distinction is built on a single element — iron. Ferrous metals contain iron; non-ferrous metals don’t. That one difference drives almost everything else: magnetism, rust resistance, weight and, crucially, value.

The magnet test in 10 seconds

You don’t need any special equipment — a basic household or fridge magnet works. Here’s the test:

  1. Grab a magnet. A common refrigerator or hardware-store magnet is enough.
  2. If the metal is rusty or painted, scuff a small clean spot first so you get an accurate result.
  3. Hold the magnet against the metal.
  4. If it sticks firmly, the metal is ferrous — it contains iron (usually steel or cast iron).
  5. If it doesn’t stick, the metal is most likely non-ferrous — copper, aluminum, brass, lead or zinc.

This simple field test works for the large majority of metals you’ll come across. There’s one notable exception — stainless steel — which we’ll get to below.

Common ferrous metals

Ferrous metals are the workhorses of the built world. They’re strong, durable and cheap, which is why they show up in construction, vehicles and heavy machinery — but their iron content also makes them magnetic and prone to rust when exposed to moisture. The most common types are mild (carbon) steel, cast iron and wrought iron.

Around the house and the job site, ferrous scrap shows up as appliances, washers and dryers, steel fencing and gates, structural beams, rebar, car bodies, pipes and steel food cans. Because it’s so abundant, ferrous metal is usually priced lower per pound than non-ferrous — often quoted by the ton rather than the pound — but it still adds up quickly by weight.

Common non-ferrous metals

Non-ferrous metals contain little or no iron, so they aren’t magnetic and they resist corrosion. They tend to be lighter, more conductive and more valuable, which is why they’re used in wiring, plumbing, electronics and specialty applications. The ones you’ll handle most often are copper, aluminum, brass, lead and zinc, along with precious metals.

Beyond the magnet: color and weight clues

Once the magnet tells you a metal is non-ferrous, color and weight help you narrow down which one it is. Copper has its unmistakable reddish-orange tone (older copper turns brown or develops a green patina). Brass is yellow-gold and noticeably heavy. Aluminum is light, dull silver and feels almost weightless for its size. Lead is dull gray and surprisingly heavy and soft. Stainless steel is bright silver and hard, and resists rust.

Weight is a useful tiebreaker: pick up two similar-sized pieces, and the much lighter one is usually aluminum. A quick scratch can help too — a shiny mark often points to a non-ferrous metal, while a duller mark suggests ferrous. None of this replaces the yard’s grading, but it’s enough to sort a load confidently before you go.

The stainless steel exception

Here’s where the magnet test gets tricky. Stainless steel contains iron, so it’s technically ferrous — but many common grades, especially the 300-series like 304 and 316, aren’t strongly magnetic because of the nickel and chromium they contain. A magnet may barely stick, or not at all.

Because stainless is worth considerably more than ordinary steel, yards grade it separately. The lesson: a magnet is a great first sort, but if something looks like stainless (shiny, rust-resistant, common in sinks, appliances and railings) and the magnet is weak or doesn’t grab, set it aside and ask the yard rather than tossing it in with mild steel.

Why it changes your payout

Sorting isn’t busywork — it’s money. Non-ferrous metals command higher prices than ferrous because they’re more valuable and reusable through many recycling cycles. When you bring a mixed, unsorted load, a yard generally has to grade it down to the lowest common metal, because someone has to spend the time separating it. Pre-sorted, clean material earns the premium rate.

So the magnet test pays for itself: separate your ferrous from your non-ferrous before you go, keep the copper away from the steel, and you’ll consistently leave with more. The same split happens at the recycler

Your magnet test mirrors exactly what happens at industrial scale. At the recycling facility, large overhead magnets pull ferrous metal away from everything else almost instantly, which is one reason ferrous is so cheap to process while non-ferrous needs more handling and commands more value. The cleaner the streams stay — yours at home and theirs at the plant — the more efficiently the metal flows back into making new products.

And that metal really does come back around. Steel is endlessly recyclable and can become anything from a new appliance to a beam in a building, while recycled copper and aluminum return as wiring, cans and countless other goods.
