A residential split-system AC has two outdoor and indoor components plus the line set connecting them. Each piece contains different recyclable metals.
The condenser (outdoor unit)
This is where the bulk of the metal value sits. A typical 3-ton residential condenser weighs 150–250 pounds total and breaks down roughly as follows:

The line set
The pair of insulated copper tubes running between the outdoor condenser and the indoor air handler. A typical residential install has 25–50 feet of line set, weighing 4–10 pounds — and it’s nearly pure copper.
Florida Refrigerant Law and the EPA Section 608 Requirement
This is the most important compliance issue with HVAC recycling. Refrigerant — including R-22 (legacy), R-410A (current standard), R-32 (newer), and R-454B (transition) — must be recovered before any unit is destroyed, scrapped, or otherwise disposed of.
EPA Section 608 of the Clean Air Act prohibits intentional venting of refrigerant. Penalties run up to $10,000+ per violation. Florida enforces this aggressively, particularly for commercial properties.
What this means in practice:
- Homeowners doing a DIY removal cannot just unhook the lines. The refrigerant must be evacuated first by a certified technician with proper recovery equipment.
- Contractors removing units for replacement should evacuate refrigerant during the removal job, document it, and then deliver the unit to scrap clean.
- Scrap City accepts units where refrigerant has been evacuated. We don’t accept units that are still pressurized or visibly leaking.
If you have a unit that hasn’t had refrigerant recovered, the simplest path is to hire an HVAC contractor for a “recovery and tag” service — typically $75–$150 per unit — before bringing it in.

How to Maximize the Scrap Value of an AC Unit
The difference between dropping an intact unit on the scale and bringing in a properly disassembled load is often 25–40% in payout.
- Confirm refrigerant has been evacuated and tagged. A removal tag from the certified tech is worth keeping with the unit through scrap.
- Cut the line set and bag the copper separately. Insulated copper line set pays at copper-with-insulation rates. Stripped line set pays at #1 copper rates — significantly higher per pound. If you have time, strip it.
- Remove the steel cabinet (optional). Pull off the top fan grille and side panels. The cabinet goes into your steel pile separately. The “core” — coil, compressor, and motor — goes into the high-value pile.
- Pull the copper coil from the condenser. On older units this is straightforward — the coil is mounted with brackets and can be lifted out. On newer units it’s more integrated. Do this only if you have the tools and time; partial disassembly is fine.
- Save the contactor and disconnect for separate handling. These small components contain copper and brass and pay better separately than as part of the steel cabinet.
- Don’t bother with the foam insulation. Most insulation is non-recyclable in scrap-yard streams. Strip and discard.

Commercial rooftop units (RTUs). Typically 3–25 tons, sitting on the roofs of strip malls, office buildings, restaurants, and warehouses. Replacement happens regularly across South Florida and individual units are often $200–$1,500 in scrap value. Roof-access disassembly and crane removal add complexity but the value justifies it.
Chillers. Industrial cooling systems for data centers, manufacturing plants, hospitals, and large commercial spaces. A 100-ton chiller can contain 200+ pounds of copper alone. Scrap value frequently $2,000–$5,000+ depending on age and condition.
Refrigeration equipment. Walk-in coolers, freezer rooms, ice machines, and commercial refrigerators all contain similar copper-aluminum-steel mixes. Often overlooked in restaurant and grocery cleanouts.
Heat exchangers from industrial process cooling. High-purity copper or stainless steel construction. Niche but extremely valuable.
